The Power of Love . . .
Scripture that I confess or speak daily include those specific to love because it’s the operative power of faith; Galatians 5:6 informs of the fact that “faith works by love”. The Concordance in one of my Study Bibles lists 138 verses but given the different words used for love such as charity, there are far more than that number pertaining to unconditional love or agape or divine love or hesed – the God-kind of love. During quality time with the LORD God yesterday, a societal need for divine love became prominent in my mind but how to address such in written form for both Believers (and those who don’t) seemed relatively overwhelming. Before quality time with the LORD God today, as I washed my face this morning and muttered Scripture, into my mind popped a song out of nowhere (though a familiar tune, it’s not in any form [i.e., album, compact disc, digital] of my music library); namely The Power of Love by Huey Lewis & the News. And as I began to sing a bit (prior to looking at YouTube for its lyrics) I thought: “well now, Huey Lewis & the News were spreading the Gospel on the down low” (so to speak). More specifically, that song has a chorus which repeats 3x: “don’t need money, don’t take fame, don’t need no credit card to ride this train”. The Prophet Isaiah wrote: “Come all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost” Isaiah 55:1-2 (NIV). Other lyrics within that song point clearly to God, “and with a little help from above you feel the power of love”. So now, I consider it along with perhaps my favorite – Love Train by The O’Jays of which the lyrics are: “People all over the world, join in, start a love train, love train. The next stop that we make will be England, tell all the folk in Russia and China too, don’t you know that it’s time to get on board, and let this train keep on riding, riding on through . . . don’t need no money, come on, don’t need no ticket, come on.” Our urgent societal panacea is love. The eloquent – What the World Needs Now is Love produced by Burt Bacharach and Hal Davis is as essential today as always. Love is the first of the fruit (Galatians 5:22-23) from which all fruit originate. Those rendered sons & daughters of God by the blood of Jesus – the redemptive work of Christ Jesus, are to walk by faith and produce love. (Matthew 17:20; Mark 11:22-24; Rom 1:17; 2Co 5:7; Galatians 3:11; Ephesians 6:16; Hebrews 10:38; Matthew 5:44; John 13:34-35 & 15:1-12; Romans 5:5 & 12:9; Galatians 5:13-14; Philippians 1:9-11; 1Jn 3:11 & 4:7-21; 2Jn 5-6).
