I.  Single Names of God:

  1. EL“THE STRONG ONE” – Occurs about 250 times; brings forth the character of strength and that God, ?l, is the first-cause of all things (Genesis 14:22)
  2. ELOAH“THE MIGHTY ONE” – Occurs about 50 times; derived from AHLAH, meaning to worship, to adore.(Nehemiah 9:17; Job 3:4 & 23, 19:4, 37:15 & 22, 39:17, 40:2)
  3. ELOHIM“THE ALMIGHTY” – Occurs about 2,500 times; gives early indication of the divine majesty and grandeur of the Godhead. (Genesis 1:1 &26).
  4. JEHOVAH “HE IS”“THE SELF-EXISTING ONE – used about 6,000 times; ; generally translated as “the LORD” and only occasionally as “Jehovah”. The spelling used here was formed in a later time period by inserting vowels to the Hebrew form YHWH to Yahweh, transliterated to Jehovah. It is used first in connection with Elohim in Genesis 2:4; “The LORD God (Jehovah Elohim) made . . .” In the name Jehovah three periods of existence come together in on word: the past, the present, and the future—He that always was, that always is, and that ever is to come (Revelation 1:4). This name parallels “Lord” as used of Jesus Christ in the New Testament.
  5. ADON“LORD” – found about 30 times; a singular form meaning Lord, Master, Possessor, or Proprietor. It first appears in Exodus 23:17 as “Ad?n Jehovah”.
  6. ADONAHY“LORD” – only in reference to a Divine title occurs about 290 times. “And Abram said, ‘Adonahy Jehovah” (Gen 15:2)

II. Compound Names of God:

  1.  Jehovah Adonahy (Adonay). Translated: “God the Lord” or “the Lord God”. Meaning: JEHOVAH (IS) THE LORD. (Psalms 68:20, 109:21, 140:7, 141:8; Habakkuk 3:19)
  2.  Jehovah Elohim – Translated : “The LORD God. Meaning JEHOVAH IS GOD (Genesis 2:4 & 3:9; 2 Samuel 7:22; 2 Kings 19:19; 1 Chronicles 17:16 & 22:1; Psalms 72:18; John 4:6)
  3.  Jehovah Sabaoth (Tsebaoth). – Translated: “The LORD of Hosts.” Meaning: JEHOVAH OF THE (HEAVENLY) ARMIES. (1 Samuel 1:3; Isaiah 31:4; 2 Samuel 6:2 & 18, 7:8, 26 & 27; 2 Kings 3:14;   Psalms 24:10, 46:7, 84:1, 3 & 12; Jeremiah 6:6, 7:3, 30:8; Micah 4:4; Zephaniah 2:9, 10)
  4.  Jehovah Elohe Sabaoth (Tsebaoth). – Translated: “The LORD God of Hosts”. Meaning: JEHOVAH (IS) GOD OF (HEAVENLY) ARMIES. (2 Samuel 5:10; 1 Kings 19:10; Psalms 59:5, 80:4 &    19, 84:8, 89:8; Jeremiah 5:14, 15:16, 37:17, 44:7; Hosea 12:5; Amos 3:13. 4:13, 6:18 & 14)
  5.  Adonahy (Adonay) Jehovah Sabaoth (Tsebaoth). – Translated: “The Lord, the LORD of hosts”. Meaning: THE LORD, JEHOVAH OF THE (HEAVENLY) ARMIES. (Isaiah 1:24, 19:4, 10:16 & 33)
  6.  Elohim Sabaoth (Tsebaoth). – Translated: “God of Hosts”. Meaning: GOD OF THE (HEAVENLY) ARMIES. (Psalms 80:7 & 14)
  7.  Adonahy (Adonay) Jehovah. – Translated: “Lord God”. Meaning: THE LORD (IS) JEHOVAH. (Genesis 15:2; Deuteronomy 3:24; Psalms 73:28; Joshua 7:7; Judges 6:22, 16:28; 1 Kings   2:26; Micah 1:2; Zephaniah 1:7; and frequently in Ezekiel)
  8.  El Elyon. – Translated: “The most high God” or “the high God”. Meaning: GOD (IS) THE HIGH ONE. (Genesis 14:18; Psalm 78:35, Genesis 14:19, 20 & 22)
  9.  El Roi. – Translated: “God seest me”. Meaning: GOD (IS) THE ONE WHO SEES ME. (Genesis 16:13)
  10. El Shadday (Shaddai). – Translated: “The Almighty God”, “God Almighty”, or “The Almighty”. Meaning: GOD (IS) THE ALL-POWERFUL ONE; found 7 times in its full form and 41 times in the form “the Almighty” mostly in the Book of Job. (Genesis 17:1, 43:14; Job 8:5)
  11. El Olam. – Translated: “The everlasting God”. Meaning: GOD (IS) THE ETERNAL ONE. (Genesis 21:33; Deuteronomy 33:27; Psalm 146:10)
  12. El Gibbor. – Translated: “The mighty God”. Meaning: GOD (IS) THE WARRIOR. (Isaiah 9:6, 10:21)
  13. Elaha Illaya (Aramaic). – Translated: “The most high God”. Aramaic equivalent to the Hebrew EL Elyon (#8 above). Meaning” GOD (IS) THE HIGH ONE. (Daniel 3:26, 5:18 &21)
